Epoxy vs. polyaspartic: which floor coating should you actually get?

Search this question and you’ll find two camps shouting past each other: epoxy loyalists calling polyaspartic overpriced, and franchise installers calling epoxy obsolete. Both are selling something. Here’s the version we’d sketch on the back of an estimate.

What each material actually is

Epoxy is a two-part thermoset resin that loves concrete. Its job is build and bond: a 100% solids epoxy base coat lays down 8-12 mils of film in one pass and grips a properly ground slab harder than anything near its price. Its weaknesses are honest ones - it cures slowly, it gets brittle when thick and cold, and sunlight ambers it.

Polyaspartic is a fast-cure aliphatic polyurea. Its job is the wear surface: it cures in hours instead of days, stays slightly flexible through freeze-thaw, resists abrasion better than epoxy, and never yellows in UV. Its weakness is cost per mil - building the whole floor out of it gets expensive, and its fast set punishes sloppy crews.

Why the answer is usually “both”

The standard system we install in Cape Girardeau garages is an epoxy base with a polyaspartic top coat - epoxy where its build and bond matter, on the bottom; polyaspartic where its UV stability and abrasion resistance matter, at the surface. Each material plays its position. That’s the whole trick, and it’s why “epoxy vs. polyaspartic” is mostly a false choice.

The exception is the schedule. A full polyaspartic system - base and top - can be ground, coated, and cured in one working day. If the garage can’t sit out of service for most of a week, that speed is worth the premium. If it can, the hybrid stack gives you more film for the money.

When each one is the wrong answer

  • Epoxy-only outside or by the garage door line: it will amber where the sun reaches. Exterior work and sun-struck edges need aliphatic chemistry, full stop.
  • Polyaspartic over damp concrete: fast cure doesn’t fix vapor drive. River-valley slabs get moisture-tested before either material goes down, and a breathing slab changes the primer, not the marketing.
  • Either one over unground concrete: the material argument is moot if the coating can’t grip. Prep beats chemistry every time - the failed floors we grind off were almost never a material problem.
